History of Dammam Railway line:
Dammam Railway Station is the eastern terminus of the Dammam–Riyadh Line and one of three active passenger stations in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. The construction of the first railway line, spanning 569 km (354 mi) from Dammam to Riyadh via Haradh, began in 1947 and was completed in 1951. This initial line was mainly used for freight transport, particularly after Hofuf.
In 1985, a new passenger railway line, the Dammam–Riyadh Railway Line 1, was completed. This 449 km (279 mi) route, which passes through Buqayq and Hofuf, reduced the travel time between Dammam and Riyadh from 7 hours to just 5 hours.
Dammam Railway Station is a critical junction, connecting several major cities including Riyadh, Hofuf, and Jubail. It plays a vital role in both passenger travel and cargo transport. In October 2022, a new freight network was inaugurated, linking Jubail’s vast industrial hub to the ports of Jubail and Dammam. This network extends an additional 60 kilometers to Ras Al Khair, enabling direct mineral freight transport from Ras Al Khair to the ports, further boosting the region’s economic connectivity.

The station’s architecture, designed by renowned Italian architect Lucio Barbera, is a striking fusion of contemporary design and traditional influences.
